The United winger played his part in the victory and was denied a goal by a smart save by Andreas Isaksson. Predictably, it was ex-Red Cristiano Ronaldo who secured the vital winner, diving to head home with eight minutes left and he also hit the bar late on.

Patrice Evra's France face an uphill battle to qualify for Brazil after a 2-0 loss in Ukraine as both sides finished with 10 men. Roman Zozulya grabbed the opener just past the hour mark and Andriy Yarmolenko's penalty gives Ukraine a healthy lead going into Tuesday's second leg in Paris. Laurent Koscielny and Oleksandr Kucher were sent off in the closing stages.

Meanwhile, England were beaten 2-0 by Chile at Wembley in a friendly with Barcelona star Alexis Sanchez scoring both goals. Phil Jones, playing at centre-back, twice went close in the first half before being replaced by Chris Smalling on 57 minutes.

Wayne Rooney played the full match and created one good opening for Adam Lallana while Tom Cleverley came on for the final 20 minutes.
Jonny Evans came through the full 90 minutes of Northern Ireland's 1-0 defeat to Turkey in Adana. Mevlut Erding scored the winner towards the end of the first half.

Nani's Portugal moved a step closer to the World Cup finals with a narrow 1-0 first-leg win in their play-off against Sweden.

Nasri started the game and played the first 80 minutes, but Clichy was an unused substitute.
After a first half of few decent chances, the game came to life after the break and City’s no.8 was at the centre of the action, creating a good opportunity for Olivier Giroud just three minutes after the restart.
But it was Ukraine who broke the deadlock after 61 minutes through Roman Zozulya, and Didier Deschamps’ men were forced to pile forward in search of an equaliser. They enjoyed the majority of possession and Giroud turned provider for Nasri, but his shot proved to be too close to the goalkeeper.
Ukraine added a second from the spot shortly after Nasri was replaced by Valbuena, and the game finished with ten on each side after Laurent Koscielny and Oleksandr Kucher were dismissed.
The two teams will face off again in the return leg in Paris on Tuesday, and City’s French duo will both be hoping they can make a telling impact as Les Bleus aim to turn the tie around.
Costel Pantilimon was an unused sub for Romania as their hopes of qualification were also dealt a resounding blow. Greece were 3-1 victors on home soil and will be confident of preserving that lead when they visit Romania in the return leg.
